Interesting conversation at work last Friday
by cruzanheart inthe wife of one of our lawyers is a judge here in dallas, and i overheard her husband telling a couple of other lawyers about this really tough case she has right now: deciding to issue a court order to give blood to premature twins whose parents are witnesses.
i popped in with "i'm an ex-jw -- ask me anything" so he and i started talking about the blood issue.
the father of the twins was in tears in the courtroom -- not because of his babies getting blood but because he was afraid he would be accused of giving his consent to the blood transfusion.

Nina, It is hard not to make generalizations, but that was always one of the things that bothered me from a rather young age, the lack of education and training the elders typically had compared to other faiths where their clery often had advanced degrees and training in counseling etc. I understand that advanced education and training is not the be all and end all, but really, would you want a car mechanic or a surgeon working on you if you have to have an operation. When my dad was terminal and on hospice, for whatever reason that just blew me away my mom allowed the hospice chaplin to stop by (he was a catholic priest of all things). I watched him and the edlers when they came by and it was such a stark difference in skill level, the priest had obviously had extensive training in grief counseling and did a good job of talking to my parents and trying to help them work through the emotions they were feeling where the elder (and he really seemed like a nice guy) stumbled around, not really knowing what to say, read some scriptures, sighed alot. Also, as a lawyer it makes my skin crawl to think that this parent is not represented by counsel and is getting info from what in all probability are high school educated people. I have watched some of these cases and they can just be heart breaking for all involved. It breaks my heart to think of those tiny little lives hanging in the balance, I mean what is more precious than a child and what greater responsibility than protecting them?

Faithfull to the end
by Ticker inmy grandma was a devout jw most of her life, and when i mean devout i mean 24-7 preaching constantly to anyone especially family.
i have her to thank for my indoctrination as a child, but i realize she was merely indoctrinated herself.
her personality traits led to her being such a zealot for the watchtower, so i have no bitterness toword her, as she has passed on a few years ago.

I was always curious about why my dad became a JW, he just never seemed the type and it always puzzled me. One day he told me he had a dream about Armageddon that scared him so badly that he woke up in a cold sweat and prayed that night like he never prayed before. At that time my mother and most of her family had already converted and were hammering on him, and it was obvious that they planted the seed. Now this was a guy who faced combat in WWII and was not prone to being easily intimidated.
I was sitting with him right before he died and he looked at me and said, I can't believe I am going to die, this wasn't supposed to happen.
It was to say the least a surreal moment, and a suitable response escaped me.

Afraid of change
by Ticker inthis is just a little diddy i thought of today as i was listening to this song, but thought its words were very truthful to all or at least some of us.

Anytime you build your life around anything it can be tough when you lose it. Build it around family and eventually you lose many to death, and that is change of the most permanant and painful sort. Or the athlete that builds his life around his performance and status as an athlete, when they can no longer compete it is rough. Build you life around more than one thing, and make them things that you feel good about and that give you something in return, and when the inevitable winds of change blow through your life it will be much easier to weather.

Carpe Diem or in english, sieze the day. Thoureau did it for me in college, Walden Pond and that quote, "I want to live deep and suck the marrow from life."
Gumby, just put yourself out there, try to experience things, chase new experiences, knowledge, etc. A wise shrink once told me that if you force yourself to act like you are living, your emotional state will be forced to catch up.

Linda Hitler - Part I
by hillary_step inmost of my problems in life stem from the day that as a seven year old that my uncle persuaded me that hitler had a daughter called linda who lived in hamburg.
linda hitler he informed me with a wild-eyed whisper lived on schopenstehl strasse and was a rather plain-looking young girl who worked at a pastry chef in one of the more up-market hotels that had survived an apocalypse of bombing during wwii.. .
well, it was not actually the process of persuasion that convinced me of the existence of ms. linda hitler, after all i was seven and he was thirty something, but it was his fervor that did it.. .
